Sara Lulo has travelled to six countries in recent years to train judges and lawyers in best practices for advocating for women. These experiences help make her very qualified to serve as the new executive director of the Avon Global Center for Women and Justice.
“Women and girls in conflict areas are often the most vulnerable population, not least because they are subject to pervasive sexual violence, amidst other atrocities,” notes Lulo, who has a B.A. in government from Cornell University, an M.A. in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from New York University, and a J.D. and LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Cornell Law School.
“The challenges involved in addressing engrained, systemic gender-based violence are complex,” says Lulo. “At the Avon Center, we focus on working with judges worldwide in an effort to make a meaningful contribution to the rule of law and advancing access to justice for women and girls.”
Lulo began working with the center in August 2009, after more than six years in private practice with White & Case LLP in London and New York. “Sara brings her passion and commitment to the promotion of rule of law and access to justice to Cornell Law School,” says Associate Clinical Professor of Law Sital Kalantry, who is the faculty director of the center. “I am confident that Sara will successfully grow and manage the important judicial programs and network of the Avon Center.”
“We’ve developed ambitious objectives for the Center,” notes Lulo. “We have a dedicated team, and are fortunate to have such strong support from the Avon Foundation and the Law School.”
