Professional Biography

Nathan Oman specializes in contracts, the theory of private law, and law and religion. At William & Mary Law School he teaches contracts, secured transactions, and a seminar on advanced contract theory. His research has focused on two areas. First, he is interested in the normative foundations of contract law and the relationship between economic theories of contract and moral theories. Second, his work on law and religion has focused on the legal experience of nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints and its relationship to American legal history. His scholarship has appeared in the Michigan Law Review, the Minnesota Law Review, the Georgetown Law Journal (forthcoming) and other venues. He is also a permanent contributor to the popular law blog www.concurringopinions.com.

Professor Oman received his BA from Brigham Young University and graduated from Harvard Law School, where he was on the Articles Committee of the Harvard Law Review and served as an editor for the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy. After law school he clerked for the Honorable Morris Sheppard Arnold of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and practiced in the Washington, DC office of Sidley Austin LLP. Prior to law school he worked on the staff of Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. In addition to the law, he enjoys chess, poetry, running, and time with his family. He will teach Contracts and Secured Transactions in the spring term.
